EHS Specialist

Austin Wood Recycling – Fort Worth, TX

We are seeking a motivated, solutions-driven EHS Specialist to join our team. Reporting directly to the EHS Manager, this role is critical to supporting and advancing our commitment to safety excellence, environmental stewardship, and fleet safety standards across the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, solutions-oriented, and strives for continuous improvement within their area of responsibility. They take ownership of their region and proactively drive safety, compliance, and risk control across multiple sites.

This position requires frequent daily travel to all AWR facilities, operational sites, and job locations across the North Texas region. Occasional overnight travel is possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and oversee environmental, health, safety, and fleet safety continuous improvement projects with a strong focus on risk control best practices to proactively minimize hazards.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of comprehensive environmental, health, and safety programs aligned with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Design, deliver and lead engaging training sessions for team members and management on EHS protocols, fleet safety, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with FMCSA and TCEQ standards throughout the assigned area.
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations, lead incident response efforts, root cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Accompany injured employees to medical appointments, managing return-to-work and injury care processes.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with distributors, suppliers, regulatory agencies, and local authorities.
  • Create regular reports for the EHS Manager detailing status updates, audit findings, incident trends, and recommendations.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives and foster a safety-first culture throughout the region.
  • Stay current on environmental, health, safety, and fleet safety regulations, industry trends, and risk control innovations to continually elevate AWR’s safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related discipline preferred.
  • OSHA Certifications required (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction).
  • ASP certification preferred (CHST, OHST, or other BCSP credentials also acceptable).

Experience

  • 3-5 years of EHS experience in industrial, construction, manufacturing, or similar environments.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing risk control best practices and leading safety programs.

Skills And Abilities

  • Strong technical and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines and work independently.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings (often starting at 6:00 AM) and occasional weekends.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying conditions (noise, dust, heat, etc.).
  • Ability to frequently climb vehicles, heavy equipment, and mulch piles.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel extensively across North Texas (company truck provided).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates preferred to better serve and communicate with our diverse workforce.
